Grant Hacket

Haikoans

III.

when night coughs
can you taste your birth

are my skies too many to bury

why is shadow the shortest route
to unexpected light

IV.

why should promises of snow
            empty the world of white

why are children who will never bear a child
            the lullaby that i sing

shall sky take my life to explain
            that nothing flies away

V.

where is the sky that fell into my birth

where is the window
where yesterday’s rain is falling

how many branches and how many voices
does yellow shed in November
