Lynsee Sardell
ARTIST STATEMENT
Most of this art is about timing. The pace of a punchline, the long seconds of waiting for the right now, instant histories, and the perception of power that shifts through human visions of time. The painted and built artifacts I make sometimes conflate recognizable mythologies with the absurd, creating relics for right now and the potential future right nows. These paintings and constructions appear to reference something within and without history; objects and images for the simile of remembering and remembering to forget. By examining the timing within anthropomorphic value systems throughout history, I make work that is intended to be read superficially or deeply, depending on your time.
ARTIST BIO
Never quite comfortable being comfortable, I am an artist living, working, parenting, exploring, studying, and distilling in Portland, Oregon - for now. Working with feminist and theoretical references, most of my art is about timing: the long seconds of waiting for something immediate to happen and how the description of power shifts through human visions of time. The painted and built artifacts I make can conflate recognizable mythologies with the absurd, creating relics for right now and future right nows. I often hear that I could have a group show of just my work and that is intentional, I’m interested in exploring, not being known for one kind of making. By examining the timing within anthropomorphic value systems throughout history, I make objects and images for the simile of remembering and remembering to forget.
